The Chariities
Set up in 2004, ABC to readis an award winning charity who safely recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to provide one-to-one mentoring of primary school children in Berkshire who are struggling to read. Each year the charity open up the eyes of hundreds of children to the joys of reading, helping them to gain an essential life skill. The charity have many local children waiting for their support but in order to do this they need to recruit more volunteers from Wokingham and Bracknell areas to join our friendly team.

The Link Visiting Schemeis a charity aimed at reducing the impact of loneliness in our older generation. We rely on volunteers to enhance the lives of older people by visiting them in their homes. We ask you to give 1-2 hours per week or per fortnight to offer friendship and support (you need to able to visit for at least 6 months). Training and support given.

Me2 Club helps children and young people with additional needs, aged 5-19, in the Wokingham Borough, to attend mainstream activity clubs. We do this by matching children with a volunteer who attends the activity with them each week and helps them to get involved. The activities can be anything from uniformed groups such as Cubs and Brownies, to gymnastics, youth groups or swimming. The support our volunteers offer can range from just being there to ease social anxieties, to working closely with the family and activity leaders to support challenging behaviours. Activities are once a week for approximately 1-2 hours during term time. We ask volunteers to commit for a minimum of 1 year to ensure continuity for the child they are matched with. Me2 Club are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for inclusion and helping others. No experience is required, you must be to be over 16, complete our Volunteer Induction Training and undergo a DBS check.

Samaritans– As a listening volunteer, after training you’ll answer calls and messages from people who really need someone to talk to. You could be based in our local branch based in Bracknell, or another branch is that’s closer.

Thames Hospice is the local charity providing expert medical, nursing and therapeutic care for adults who have life-limiting illnesses. Their shop, based in central Wokingham, is essential to their fundraising efforts. They are looking for volunteer retail assistants to help with sorting donations, customer service/till work and visual merchandising. They have various shifts available from Monday to Saturday, and are happy to be flexible. Volunteers must be aged 16 and over.

Exploreis a relationships education charity, which delivers workshops within secondary schools; giving young people the opportunity to discuss and evaluate long-term, positive, healthy relationships, using marriage as a model.
We are looking for both facilitators who have good communication and presenting skills to oversea the workshop, and married couples who are willing to sit in front of a group of teenagers (alongside a facilitator who is running the session) and answer questions about their relationship experiences. We aren’t looking for ‘perfect’ couples just couples that are willing to be open, genuine and honest.

Sue Ryderprovides hospice and neurological care for people facing a frightening, life changing diagnosis. Wokingham Day Hospice try to be a safety net for patients and their loved ones at a difficult time. We provide specialist services to patients living at home led by nurses experienced in palliative care. Our volunteers support our medical staff with the housekeeping and befriending of our patients and our driver volunteers transport our patients to and from Day Hospice.

Abbeyfield – We are a registered charity and at Winnersh we provide support to people living with dementia.
Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for older people. We believe older people deserve time and respect.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Abbeyfield. We are currently looking for volunteers to enhance the wellbeing of our residents e.g. arts and crafts, gardening, befrienders, or to run our shop.

Home-Start Wokingham District trains volunteers to support families living in the area who have at least one child under the age of five and who are experiencing difficulties such as physical and mental illness, disability, bereavement, isolation and multiple births. These families are supported by a trained home-visiting volunteer, with parenting experience, at least once a week to provide support to help prevent crisis and family breakdown.

Wokingham Lions Clubserves our local community, aiming to help those in need and the most vulnerable in our community. We organise the May Fayre and help run the Wokingham Charity Fireworks Spectacular, as well as various smaller events and 100% of any money raised goes to good causes. It is not all hard work however; we have regular social events and don’t take ourselves too seriously.

The Sports & Leisure teamhas a wide choice of projects to suit all levels of commitment and experience. Some of our projects are linked with health & wellbeing while some sessions are sports specific.
Volunteering opportunities are available in the following projects: Dementia Friendly activities, Fall prevention sessions, Social Isolation reduction, Mental Health activities, Peer Mentoring Support, Walking for Health and much more.
We are looking for volunteers who value the benefits of physical activity and a background in health, fitness and sport would be an advantage but not essential. A willingness to learn and a friendly nature are more important. We support all our volunteers and we aim to make them feel valued, understood and proud to be associated with the work the Sports & Leisure team deliver. We will evaluate what our volunteers are excited about, what interests them and aim to offer up opportunities and placements that suit individual’s personalities and goals.

Just Around the Corner (JAC) is a Berkshire based registered charity committed to engaging with young people and their families, enabling them to make positive choices, by demonstrating love and acceptance according to Christian principles.

Holt Copse is a small, semi-natural wood to the NW of Wokingham which HCCV manage on behalf of Wokingham Town Council. At work parties on alternate Saturday mornings between October and March (and at some mid-week ones) we coppice and plant trees, clear scrub and invasive plants, maintain paths and build bridges. HCCV have installed and monitor over 40 bird and bat boxes and have surveyed the plants found in the Copse.

Wokingham Citizens Advice is a local charity that helps people to resolve challenges and problems that they face and find a way forward. Our service is free, independent, impartial and confidential. We provide face to face, telephone and email support in a variety of subject matters, for example, housing, benefit, debt and employment.

The Wokingham Transport Scheme– Do you have an hour or so to spare each week? Maybe you are recently retired? Perhaps your children are at school? Maybe you are not in employment and would like to keep busy while you are looking for your next job? Maybe you work shifts and would like a voluntary role which can fit around them?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then the Wokingham Community Transport Scheme needs you!
All you need is your own car – there is no cost to you as we reimburse all your expenses. The Scheme provides low cost transport for the elderly to hospital, local doctors, dentists, opticians, and physiotherapy. It provides an essential service to clients who live in Wokingham, Barkham, Finchampstead and Winnersh.
