Uphill battle for the Rovers at Caversham AFC

What was looking like being a total wash out after a rainy start to the morning turned out to be a beautiful morning.

Caversham have the Kick off and immediately break down the right forcing The Rovers to concede an early corner. A quick, well taken corner, not defended and Caversham are 1-0 up with only a minute gone. That’s not the start The Rovers were hoping for.

Good possession for The Rovers after conceding the early goal, they have now woken up and are starting to play some good passing football.  Lucas, leading from the back, playing out to Sam who passing it down the wing to Kamran who makes one of his now trade mark crosses, but unfortunately this time there was no one able to get on the end of it. This is much better from The Rovers.

Unfortunately the positive spell does not last. As The Rovers have learnt from some previous games, it only takes a moments lack of concentration and you get punished.  A simple thru ball from Caversham, some confusion in defence, left a simple shot passed the keeper and Caversham score their 2nd

This season The Rovers  have learnt not to let their heads go down if they fall behind and they get straight back down to business.  Once again regaining most of the possession and make an immediate response…. Scoring a beautifully team goal, the initial ball played through from midfield by Jake to Harrison who unselfishly laid it off to Nathaniel for a simple tap in. Finch are back in the game.

Straight back to dominating possession after the restart, Jake is on fire in the midfield,  with a penetrating run, 1 on 1 with the keeper, but unfortunately he leans back a bit on his shot and  it goes just over bar.  Caversham are defending really well and absorbing the pressure, so unfortunately The Rovers are  not able to capitalise on their dominance.

Only a few minutes left in the first half and Caversham give away a free kick just outside their half. The free kick is taken short and quickly, but Caversham pounce and steal the ball. With only the keeper left to beat, it is an easy goal. 3-1 to Caversham.

The referee blows for half time. The score line is definitely not reflecting the possession and quality that The Rovers have shown.

The second half is underway and The Rovers are now playing uphill in more ways than one. Can they turn this around?

In the first ten minutes it’s a midfield battle with both teams cancelling each other out. Since Jake was taken off with an ankle injury late in the first half, George has become dominant in midfield both in supporting in defence and also in attack, where he narrowly misses hitting the back of the net with a long shot (or maybe clearance) from just inside the half way line.

The Rovers continue to have several opportunities in the next 20 minutes:

First, Sam playing thru to Nathaniel, who goes expertly round the keeper and narrowly misses passed the left post.  Then, Kamran breaks down the right wing, passing to Ajay who draws a foul on the edge of the box. The subsequent free kick is well cleared well by Caversham. Next up its George, who plays a beautiful pass through to Nathaniel who lays it to Harrison but it’s just too close to the keeper who scoops it up safely.

Can The Rovers capitalise and pull a goal back?. Yes they can! Jake (back on after a speedy recover)passes the ball to lucas who plays a sublime ball from midfield to Nathaniel, who passes unselfishly to Harrison who slots it passed the keeper. 3-2 The Rovers are resurgent and with only 5 min to go is time running out?

Caversham are now on the back foot as we go into the last 2 minutes and maybe the last chance of the game. The Rovers have a free kick, 30 yards or so out on the right wing. Sam steps up and delivers a great cross into the box. Ajay is only inches away from connecting and so close to getting the equaliser they really deserve.

The Referee blows the final whistle. What a great effort by the boys, they never gave up, kept on trying their very best right to the final whistle.
