Sunday 29th October
Finchampstead Hurricanes V Worplesdon Rangers Trojans
A week off from Premier football and the Hurricanes were not looking sharp as the game kicked off on the huge full sized pitch at Urnfield School in Guildford. Not helped by a couple of warm up injuries forcing last minute changes to the starting line up.
The home team had very quick strikers and a long ball from
the wings to their strikers had the Hurricanes chasing the game 1-0
down. And before they could get into their stride, they gave the ball
away on a Finch counter attack and were punished again 2-0 down. The
large pitch was suiting Worplesdon long ball tactics and Finch passing
quality wasn’t good enough to maintain possession and pressing wasn’t
cutting off the service to the strikers.
But the
Hurricanes showed real determination after that, maintaining possession
and applying the pressure far up the pitch. Passing quality came right
up, shape and pressing tightened up. Some quick feet and close control
of the football in a very small space created just the opening for a top
bins finish to get the lads back in the game 2-1. This rallied them and
they were quickly back on the offensive after the restart.
A
defensive mix up in the Worplesdon penalty box created the second
chance which was calmly put away just before the half time break. 2-2.
A
bit of a rocket, some tweaks and geeing up at half time with a few
Jelly Babies seemed to do the trick and the Hurricanes were able to hold
off the home team attacks and maintain more possession.
Finch
kept working the possession all the way up the pitch and created a
number of good opportunities, but couldn’t find the net in spite of 2
lobbed attempts and 2 goal mouth scrambles. The winner came from a left
wing throw into the penalty box and a slotted shot curled into the far
side of the net got the Hurricanes ahead 3-2.
Worplesdon
stuck with the long ball and chasing game, but the lads were wise to
this and defended it well, winning the ball back time and time again.
They had more chances to extend the lead but couldn’t hit the target
when it counted. But were able to see the game out for their 3rd win in a
row.
Final score 3-2 to Finch and some tired players.
Well done to the Hurricanes.
