Final Game of the Season – Sunday 28th May 2017

Finchampstead Hurricanes 4 – 3 Burpham

The lads arrived pitch side as the penultimate league game was concluding between Send and Windlesham. A Windlesham result would guarantee the Hurricanes a minimum 4th place finish. And they did us the favour beating Send 4-1. So it was now just a small matter of chasing 3rd place!!

Finch got off to another quick start with their passing football, but weren’t able to hit the mark on the final pass to create the scoring opportunities. Play was definitely in Finch’s favour though with Burpham opting for the long ball tactic. The Finch shorter football game was definitely having more impact.

Pressure from Burpham took its toll with a scrambled goal at the Finch end. To their credit they kept their heads and just carried on playing. Gradually getting closer and closer to the home teams goal. The equaliser came from a long free kick out of the left wing and a flick in the penalty box into the net just before the half time whistle. 1-1 half time.

Confidence was good going into the second half with the lads sensing they were playing the better football. The Hurricanes hit the target early on from a squared ball across the box. 2-1 and flying. Another long ball from the left wing opened Burpham’s defence up and a calm finish under pressure put them 2 goals clear. 3-1.

Burpham weren’t beaten, coming back on the counter and winning a succession of corners. Drilled delivery onto a yellow shirt on the 6 yd line, headed home. 3-2. A carbon copy corner / header / goal a few minutes later put the home team on level terms, 3-3 with 15 mins to go.

To their credit the Hurricanes kept their passing game going, winning and maintaining possession, and working the ball up field. The work rate was high in spite of the warm conditions, the desire to win the ball was there. Defensively Finch were looking very strong, easily dealing with the long balls and counters. A long bouncing ball over the Burpham keeper was just asking to the headed in, but the post saved the Burpham’s keepers blushes.

It was now about who wanted it more. Burpham were sitting deeper in numbers, Finch keeping the pressure on with the passing play. And then the ball falls to the Kraken in the home teams midfield, maybe 30-35 yds out with just enough space…..and what a strike into the roof of the net. Keeper had no chance. And although Burpham tried to rally, they just couldn’t create anything through the rock solid Finch defence. 4-3 final score to Finch…..3rd place finish!! Superb way to finish the 2016-17 season winning the very last game of the Championship.

Massive congratulations to the Hurricanes for a strong finish in their debut season in the SPL Championship, finishing 3rd on 37 points. Although matching Worplesdon on points, the strong win against them in the double headers has put them above.
